[N]PO Guidelines
 
A number of the laboratory tests and imaging studies we perform require you to be non per os (from the Latin for "nothing by mouth"), or NPO. These tests include any fasting/diabetic labs and any complete physicals. If you are uncertain whether you should be NPO for an appointment, please contact our nursing staff.

If your appointment requires that you be NPO, please follow these guidelines:
  • Do not eat anything after midnight the night before your exam.
  • Do not drink anything except for water after midnight and prior to your exam.
  • If you require medication that is to be taken with food, please contact our nursing staff before your appointment.
  • Take your usual medications unless specified otherwise.
