[R]x  Prescribing Practices

Refilling non-controlled, routine medications can typically be accomplished over the phone, provided that the patient has been recently seen or has had an ongoing relationship with our clinic. This can be done by calling our main number and choosing the appropriate option from our menu. You will be notified by phone when your prescription has been called in or is ready to pick up.

PLEASE NOTE: Any requests for refills made after 3:30 pm may not be available until the next business day, so please plan accordingly, especially if you run out of your medication before a weekend or holiday. Due to liability issues, your medical provider reserves the right to refuse to refill medications on a case-by-case basis depending on the circumstances, and may require you to make an office visit prior to authorizing a refill. We may not refill controlled or narcotic medications by phone.

Calling In New Medications

Due to liability issues, and consistent with responsible medical care, it is our general policy to not call in medications for a new problem without the patient being seen and examined first. The physician reserves the right to deviate from this policy on a case-by-case basis, however, depending on the unique clinical situation. Narcotic pain medications and other controlled substances will not be called in after normal business hours. There will be NO exceptions to this policy.

Mail-Order Pharmacies

Due to liability issues, it is the general policy of ResponsiCareSM to not call in or fax solicited prescription requests to mail-order or out-of-area pharmacies except as mandated by contractual agreements or applicable law.  Should our patients choose to utilize these services, it is their responsibility to ensure that all necessary paperwork is completed and that only standard prescriptions on official ResponsiCareSM prescription forms be submitted.  We believe that local pharmacies and those mail-order pharmacy services contracted with your insurer are the safest and most accountable.

If you do wish to utilize out-of-area, mail-order, or discount pharmacies that we are not required by contract or law to do business  with, or those pharmacies that require us to answer multiple medical questions on non-standardized forms, we will request that you make a clinic appointment so that your provider can complete such forms.  ResponsiCareSM understands that medications are expensive, and that you want to obtain your medications at the most reasonable prices possible.  However, many discount mail-order pharmacies (often specializing in diabetic supplies, and most based out of Florida) may not be reputable, and usually require us to complete forms regarding your medical history that we would not normally have to complete with local pharmacies or reputable mail-order pharmacies (such as Medco or Express Scripts).  Furthermore, since we have most likely provided you with written prescriptions already, re-authorizing medications and completing solicited, non-standardized forms is redundant, labor-intensive, and can lead to errors in transcription, as well as delays in therapy, because such requests are usually faxed to us at random times by companies that may be unfamiliar to our staff.

Please help us reduce delays, limit redundant tasks, and decrease the chance of medication errors by utilizing only local pharmacies and reputable mail-order companies specifically endorsed by your health insurer.
