Predictions on the Future of Medicine in the Next Decade:
.| DNA |.
Some of the greatest scientific progress will be the result of discoveries secondary to The Human Genome Project, agressive stem-cell research, cloning, cell-signaling processes, and computer modeling algorithms for the production of DNA vaccines, eventually making other forms obsolete.  Anti-cancer and AIDS vaccines will become realities, and we may be able to direct more targeted cancer therapy via engineered nanoparticles and targeting peptides, a so-called "magic bullet" cancer chemotherapy concept where the whole body may not have to suffer the ravages of traditional chemotherapy by directing drug-containing particles that are, perhaps, one-billionth of a meter in size into targeted cancer cells.  There will be enhanced interest in preventive and anti-aging medicine.

The proposed government healthcare program may need an early re-tooling secondary to unforeseen financial losses due to overutilization and uncontrolled access, combined with over-taxing healthcare provider resources, currently in shortage.  Incentives will need to be re-aligned to enhance overall healthcare quality, especially in sparsely populated, rural areas.  Americans will be forced to value healthcare differently, as they will be held more accountable, and will become less uncoupled financially from the consequences of their actions and lifestyle choices, as third-party payors re-stratify their risk pools and reward healthy behaviors while taxing those that make unhealthy choices.  The age group comprising those 85 and older will continue to grow disproportionally to the remainder of the population, and the social and economic burdens to society will increase accordingly if we are not fully prepared to keep our seniors active and healthy.
